History

SBA’s history began in 1932, when Edwin “Ted” Steffian opened a one-man architecture studio in downtown Boston, Massachusetts. The firm quickly built a strong reputation within the city’s emerging design community, completing projects for academic institutions and private developers throughout the eastern U.S. Thirty years later, Ted’s son Peter joined his father’s growing company, and in 1965 they forged Steffian, Steffian and Bradley with the addition of partner Tony Bradley.

After Ted’s retirement in 1972, Peter and Tony took the reins of SBA|Steffian Bradley Associates, Inc. and expanded the firm’s portfolio in the academic, corporate, healthcare, and residential design markets. Over the following decades, Peter guided the next generation of aspiring professionals, which included SBA’s current stockholders, who began their early careers at the company during the 1980s and 1990s. Flourishing under Peter’s guidance, these leaders have since evolved the company into the worldwide practice it is today.

Beginning in 2000, Steffian Bradley Architects expanded from its local roots with the addition of an independent office of 40+ professionals in London, England; a regional New England office in Enfield, Connecticut; and affiliate offices in Guangzhou, China, and Vancouver, Canada. We also developed Sterling Planning Alliance, an in-house division of dedicated healthcare planners that assist our regional, national, and global clients with their strategic planning needs. Today, our portfolio represents work on three continents and boasts a global staff that brings experience from dozens of cities and regions.

Our local allegiances have deepened as well, and we remain dedicated to provided architectural excellence in our local New England neighborhoods. Over the past 80 years, SBA has continued to serve Boston clients with our in-depth knowledge of the city’s evolution and growth. Over time, the firm has been headquartered alternately in Boston’s North End and financial district, and now resides on the buzzing waterfront of South Boston. In addition, we have expanded our capacity to serve clients in western New England with our Connecticut office, which provides a local base for many of our healthcare, academic, and life sciences projects.

From Ted Steffian’s one-man practice, the SBA of today has evolved into a 150-person organization led collectively by a partnership of eleven Stockholder/Principal directors. Though much has changed since our early origins, SBA remains committed to fostering Peter and Ted Steffian’s legacy of collaborative partnerships, high-caliber designs, and innovative thinking.
